DiMA: World IP Day Inspires Innovation

For Immediate Release

Date: April 25, 2017

(Washington, D.C.) – Chris Harrison, CEO of the Digital Media Association, issued the following statement in recognition of World Intellectual Property Day - April 26, 2017:

“DiMA and its members applaud the World Intellectual Property Organization for focusing this year’s World IP Day on the ways in which innovation enriches our lives.  DiMA members are at the forefront of driving the innovations that empower consumers to enjoy more content across more platforms than ever before.  At the same time, DiMA members remunerate billions of dollars each year to the creative community and serve a critical role in fueling the creative engine.

For example, digital music streaming services drove a 6% rise in global music revenue in 2016.  In the past five years, e-book sales have nearly tripled surpassing 200 million units sold; and just last year U.S.-based revenues from the leading online video distributors grew by 32% to reach $8.3 billion.

The key to all of this prosperity has been a complex, yet balanced system of copyright laws that protect property rights while promoting increased innovation.

As we look ahead to next year’s celebration, it’s our sincere hope that policymakers will continue this tradition.”
