DiMA Statement: NAB Proposal for Broadcast Radio Performance Royalties

(Washington, D.C. -- October 26, 2010) -- The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) this week released a “term sheet” that proposes a first-ever performance royalty for terrestrial broadcast radio.  The terms are part of an ongoing negotiation with the musicFIRST coalition.  Lee Knife, Interim Executive Director of the Digital Media Association (DiMA) issued this statement:

“DiMA is pleased that the National Association of Broadcasters and MusicFIRST continue progress toward an agreement on performance royalties for terrestrial broadcasters. We hope that the process continues amid an understanding that a fair marketplace demands that rate structures and terms - including all applicable discounts and concessions - for any one platform must be applied with equal force to all other platforms, such as internet radio, cable and satellite.

“As the current debate over performance rights continues and perhaps begins to make its way back to Congress, we hope that policymakers will recognize the importance of a level playing field for all radio as clearly best for music consumers, music creators and radio service providers.”
