DiMA Urges Policymakers to Focus Online Privacy Policies on Stopping ‘Bad Apples’ While Protecting Innovators that Offer Consumers Convenience and Cost Savings

Washington, D.C. (December 1, 2010) – In response to today’s release of the Federal Trade Commission’s preliminary staff report on “Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change,” Lee Knife, Interim Executive Director of the Digital Media Association, issued the following statement:

“We are pleased that the FTC’s preliminary staff report acknowledges that a number of companies make use of consumer information they collect online in innovative ways that allow them to provide consumers with new and better products and services. DiMA strongly urges that if federal policymakers see a need to develop privacy policies, they do so in a way that continues to encourage innovation that delivers consumers convenience and cost savings by specifically addressing the behavior of companies that misuse consumer information. The implementation of a far reaching, one-size fits all solution would cause more harm than good.”
